Barb Smith is the Executive Director of Survivors of Suicide where she advocates for mental health and suicide awareness, and provides suicide prevention, intervention, and aftercare training. She does most of her work in the Great Lakes Bay region (Saginaw, Bay, and Midland counties), and throughout the state of Michigan. Staff at HealthyMenMichigan.org recently caught up with partner Barb Smith about how the campaign has changed her work.

Smith says that she sees a lot of alcohol and other substance use disorders among the men in her region, and often struggles to find them the right referrals. She has embraced the HealthyMenMichigan.org campaign and distributes the posters, coasters, fliers, and and wallet cards to locations around her region. She also talks about the campaign in her presentations and encourages people to use it as a resource, leaving each area she visited a supply of materials to distribute and display.

“It’s difficult to get men to come for services. HealthyMenMichigan.org is an innovative way to invite men to access services in the privacy of their home or workplace,” Smith says. “It’s a starting point to have an open conversation and let men know they are not alone.”
