Youth Suicide and Self-Injury Prevention

SOS Signs of Suicide® Booster/Self-Injury Kit

The SOS Booster/Self-Injury Kit contains materials for these two programs.

The SOS Signs of Suicide Booster Program:

  • Is a refresher course of the original SOS Signs of Suicide program for juniors and seniors preparing for life beyond high school
  • Teaches students how to identify and respond to serious depression and potential suicidality in themselves or a friend
  • "Graduates" the ACT® acronym to be more relevant for individuals approaching adulthood, replacing the Tell in ACT: Acknowledge, Care, Tell with Treatment—Help the person you are concerned about get to treatment
  • Focuses on maintaining mental health through the transition from high school to college, military or the workplace
  • Familiarizes students with college and community-based mental health

The Signs of Self-Injury Prevention Program:

  • Is a school-based curriculum designed to address the issue of self-injury in the high school population
  • Is based on the same model that Screening for Mental Health used to develop its award-winning SOS program
  • Applies principles of modeling to teach youth to recognize signs of distress, in either themselves or a friend and to respond effectively using the ACT method (Acknowledge, Care and Tell)

Self-injury is defined as deliberately harming one’s body, usually without suicidal intent, in order to reduce psychological distress.
